Choosing the Right Cargo Basket
-
Check hitch vs roof mount
You must decide between hitch and roof mounting first. The Leader Accessories 60x24x6 Folding Hitch Carrier uses a hitch mount. This keeps gear close to the ground for easier loading. It also avoids roof rack interference. Other models use roof rack mounts. Choose hitch mounts if you have a receiver. Choose roof mounts if you lack a hitch. Your vehicle’s available attachment point dictates this choice entirely.
-
Verify load capacity limits
Capacity limits determine what you can safely transport. The top-rated hitch carrier supports up to 500 pounds. This high limit suits heavy equipment or large bulk items. Roof baskets often have lower weight limits. You must check the manufacturer’s stated max weight. Exceeding this limit risks damage to your vehicle. It also creates safety hazards while driving. Always match your heaviest gear to the highest rated option available in this list.
-
Assess included weather protection
Weather protection keeps your gear dry during travel. The Leader Accessories 60x24x6 model includes a rain bag. This is essential for outdoor gear that must stay dry. The second option also includes a cargo bag. You should verify if a bag is included in the box. Buying a separate rain cover adds cost and complexity. Select a model with an included bag for immediate protection against rain and dust.
-
Evaluate cargo securing methods
Securing loose items prevents them from falling out. The Leader Accessories 64x39 Basket includes a cargo net. This net helps contain smaller or irregularly shaped items. It works alongside adjustable hooks for added stability. The hitch carrier relies on its bag for containment. You need nets if you transport loose tools or sports gear. Check for included nets or hooks if your cargo shifts easily during transit.
-
Compare physical dimensions carefully
Physical dimensions determine if the basket fits your needs. The hitch carrier measures 60 inches by 24 inches. The roof basket measures 64 inches by 39 inches. You must ensure these lengths fit your vehicle’s hitch or rack. Wider baskets hold more volume but may block rear visibility. Longer baskets extend further back. Measure your vehicle’s available space before purchasing. The correct size ensures safe transport without interference.
