How to choose the right cargo basket
-
Check hitch compatibility
You must verify your vehicle has a receiver hitch before buying. The top-rated Leader Accessories 60x24x6 model is a hitch mount carrier. It requires a compatible receiver tube on your vehicle. Roof baskets attach to crossbars, but this unit does not. Ensure your hitch class supports the weight. This basket weighs 47.1 pounds. You need a hitch that handles this load plus your cargo. Check your owner manual for hitch specifications to avoid damage.
-
Measure your cargo space
Length matters for fitting items inside. The first pick measures 60 inches long. This suits long items like kayaks or lumber. The second option is wider at 39 inches. Choose based on what you carry most often. Longer baskets handle elongated gear better. Wider baskets hold bulky boxes. Measure your typical load before deciding. Ensure the basket fits your hitch or roof setup. Proper sizing prevents overhang and safety issues during travel.
-
Evaluate included protection
Both models include a cargo bag. This protects your gear from rain and dust. The second option also includes a cargo net. This adds security for loose items. If you carry soft goods, the bag is essential. If you have boxes or bikes, the net helps. Check which accessories you actually need. The included bag saves you from buying extra parts. Verify the bag fits your specific basket size for best results.
-
Consider folding storage
Storage space in your garage matters. The top pick folds flat for easy storage. This is useful if you live in a small home. You can tuck it away when not in use. The second model is a fixed basket. It takes up more space when stored. Decide if you need frequent access. Folding units offer convenience for occasional use. Fixed baskets may be more rigid for daily hauling. Check the folded dimensions to ensure it fits your storage area.
-
Assess weight capacity
Total weight includes the basket and cargo. The first unit weighs 47.1 pounds. The second weighs 44.4 pounds. Add your cargo weight to these numbers. Ensure your hitch or roof bars support the total. Exceeding limits can damage your vehicle. Heavier baskets may hold more but strain your car. Lighter baskets are easier to install. Check the manufacturer specs for max load. Never exceed the rated capacity for safe driving.
